GREAT NURSING PIONEER - PART 1

FLORENCE NIGHTINGALE

Florence Nightingale, the daughter of the wealthy landowner, William Nightingale of Embly Park, Hampshire, was born in Florence, Italy, on 12th May, 1820. Her father was a Unitarian and a Whig who was involved in the anti-slavery movement. As a child, Florence was very close to her father, who, without a son, treated her as his friend and companion. He took responsibility for her education and taught her Greek, Latin, French, German, Italian, history, philosophy and mathematics.

1) In 1852 Florence Nightingale wrote Cassandra but on the advice of friends she never published the book.

NEW DRUG WEAKENS CANCER CELLS

In early studies in mice, tumors shrank by 90 percent

TUESDAY, Aug. 30 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers say they're making headway towards a drug that weakens cancer cells without exposing the body to the destructive effects of chemotherapy and radiation.

Tumors in cancer-ridden mice shrank by 90 percent after treatment with the drug, researchers report in a study to be released Tuesday. The compound, called OGT2378, appears to block the ability of cancer cells to grow by manipulating the host's immune system.

However, the research is still in the preliminary stages and the treatment is certainly not a cure, cautioned study co-author Dr. Stephan Ladisch, director of the Center for Cancer and Immunology Research at the Children's Research Institute in Washington, D.C.
